ABOUT US
‘In Other Words was originally a high-street bookshop, opening in Plymouth in 1982. For 25 years we provided an alternative to the mainstream book trade, focussing on books that catered for minorities or weren’t well represented elsewhere. Thus we became known for books covering anti-nuclear or anti-military issues, the environment, feminism, gay issues, multiculturalism, Eastern philosophies, paganism, astrology and tarot and much else besides. And we sold all sorts of things apart from books – cards and calendars, essential oils and crystals, mobiles and candles, tarot decks, incense, jewellery, Buddhas…….and so on.
Sadly, in May 2007, we succumbed to the forces destroying the independent book sector in the UK – chief among them property prices and rising rents, heavy discounting from the supermarkets and chains, and, of course, competition from the internet. After so many years in the book trade, we didn’t want to leave behind something that had given us so much pleasure and enjoyment, so we, too, are going on-line and becoming a web-based bookseller.
Our web-site will take time to build but will reflect the areas of interest mentioned above. What follows is a taster; a promotion for some titles that we would like to tell you about while we develop the site. We will eventually have a full database for you to browse in as well as our own promotions.

Plymouth–based jazz singer Louise Parker has been having some well-deserved recognition recently. Did you catch her singing on Humphrey Lyttelton’s late-night jazz programme on Radio 2, ‘The World of Jazz’? On 9th July 2007, he played one of the tracks from ‘No More Strangers’ and told the world that she would be a household name before much time had passed……the next night, she sang with his band at the Bulls Head, Barnes, to rapturous applause.
